Can't we do something?

If you are a NET qualified person, a PhD holder or a NET aspirant, I have something to tell you...
As we are aware, we are living in an academically competitive society. Today, every post graduate in Kerala aspires to qualify the CSIR-UGC NET exam and we know you are well aware of the competition and struggle in that field. Jumping over the NET barrier is considered to be a great achievement in today’s academic scenario.
But, what if we have a NET certificate in our hands? Should we wait like hornbills for the vacancy rain from PSC? There are so many vacancies in the aided-unaided sector. But when we approach them with our achievement in our hand, they seem to be more interested in something else. Well, that thing-money-is not an achievement.
If you want to be a lecturer, you not only have to be qualified but also have to be rich. As you are aware, the amount you will be asked ranges between 15 to 25 lakhs. No one would say it is a small amount. Say, you pay this amount, you get no receipt, no record that you have paid it. The controversial dismissal of Prof. T. J. Joseph (whatever may be the reason behind) shows that the management the management holds the power to deprive you of your position. Then what about the titanic amount you paid?
This should not be the picture of our field. Community or wealth should not be a criterion for appointments. The salary a teacher gets from the government doesn’t come from his community; it comes from the tax paid by the entire public. We don’t say that management shouldn’t get any benefit from appointments, have to run the institution. But there should be some criterion. They should not hinder the dignity of academic society. Money matters, but it should not be only money that matters.
There is some misconception in the society that students who qualify competitive exams are book-worms and they don’t usually interfere in social issues or they cannot raise their voice for their rights. We should prove otherwise…

If we get united and say that “we are not ready to pay” in a single voice, what can they do? There is scarcity of NET qualified candidates in many disciplines. We believe there IS something we can do together in this. We would like to hear from you all. Please join us, share your views, comments, experiences etc here. Looking forward to hearing from you…

  2. I am a NET Holder in Zoology since 2003. I am not ready play any of these stinky money game for a post of lecturer. I heard a lot from the surroundings about 15 to 25 lakhs for a post. This is another mode of crime/bribe. No institutions have the right to grab any sort of donations for a post and none of us have the right to do so.
There is another funny thing too..
In an interview score board, B. Ed, M. Phil, ph.D etc are considered to bag plus marks. But unfortunately NET for Lecturership-which is the National Level Competitive test and a Cirtificate of which is not at all eligible for a plus marks. This is not fare. The cirtificate is considered just as a mandatory qualification.just like, SSLC, Degree or what ever.

    1. Geo...its true, NET certificate doesn't carry extra/plus points....but if you have JRF, and pursuing research, then of course there is plus marks....like for any additional PG (there is 5 marks), for B.ed (5 marks extra), M.phil (5 marks), as well as for Ph.D holders too.... [apart from the above, marks are there for regional/national/international publications (with ISSN/ISBN). For experiences too (as FIP or leave vacancy or guest lecturer in any AIDED colleges) there is extra marks....
If you satisfy bulk of the above things, then your interview index would be too strong and you can easily get into the merit list without any recommendation or bribe provided you reasonably perform in the interview too! I have not paid a single rupee to get into an aided college, not my alone effort, its god's grace and my professors, parents blessings.... Goodluck to you....don't get disappointed....

  4. Hai,
I am a NET holder in Botany, presently looking for lecture vacancy in Kerala. I applied in many colleges and experienced the bitter situation that without paying a minimum of 20 Lakhs (20-40 Lakhs), there is absolutely no chance of getting in even though I have relevant qualification. Now I am waiting for PSC notification. Thanks for the openness to show the real situation in Kerala.
First, we have to change our attitude, not to give money to any education authority, because after getting the job what to say to your students about jobs opportunities?.Tell that you need to pay a huge amount after qualifying the best life science exam in India. Then what is the meaning of qualifying all these exams? At the end, our pocket thickness will define whether we get into a lectureship job or not. Really pathetic situation...
    Waiting for new post.
    Thanks for sharing..

  6. The blog-post by Deena T Kochurani from Botany discipline reveals that 20-40 lakh rupees is the current rate of bribe in 2012 to get a lectureship job in a government-aided college in our 'most literate state'! This is despite the fact that the lion's share of the expenditure in these colleges, namely, on salaries has been met from the public exchequer of the state government. What can we call it other than daylight robbery continuing for decades on end! (I do agree that there are even exceptional aided colleges which do not take a bribe. But they are only rare exceptions to the rule.) Given the sorry state of academic appointments in the state, there should be a strong demand that 90 per cent of the appointments of teachers in aided colleges be made through the PSC and the provisions of protective discrimination through reservations be strictly implemented. What is wrong in demanding that even minority institutions mostly funded by the government should provide a proportional share of reservations to disadvantaged communities. All the lectureship aspirants are welcome to join our facebook network, 'Network for Fair Academic Appointments' at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/231711236946213/.

  7. The deterioration of the situation in the higher education of our state can be illustrated through an example. Take the case of someone paying 25 lakh rupees to get into a college teaching job in an aided college. This ‘smart guy’ takes a dowry of 50 lakh rupees in the marriage market. He becomes a respectable man and it is okay for the people of 'the most literate state' that such men are teaching ethical values to our younger generation! What a corruption of civic life does it cause! Unfortunately, even this route is not available to women candidates. You are welcome to mail me to: gilbertseb@gmail.com.
